After the drive, we arrived at the Konavoski
Dvori Restaurant grounds. As we left the busses, we walked through the
woods as a stream flowed next to the path. As the walk continued, the
scenery became more picturesque with multiple streams and waterfalls.
Suddenly, around a bend, we were greeted by restaurant employees in native
costumes offering us trays of figs and small glasses of a local brandy to
tide us over on our walk. We walked some more, past waterfalls like
#293 and then came to the restaurant next to the old water mill (294).
As we arrived at the restaurant, we could see many ponds with hundreds of
trout (295). Later, we learned that if we chose trout from the menu,
it came from the ponds a few minutes earlier. Overall, it was a
magnificent setting and the food was great.
Later, we made our way back to the ship, noting
the new bridge almost completed (298), replacing one of the structures
damaged in the war. Our guide pointed out that during the worst of the
war (about eight months beginning in October, 1991), the Serbs were shelling
the town from hills like that shown in # 298. Given the Serbs'
position, it is remarkable that so much of Dubrovnik is intact. The
guide had a final comment that now that the war is over (in their area),
Serbs and other former enemies sometimes live in your neighborhood.
She said that while everyone wants peace, it is hard to be very friendly
with people that, a few years back, were trying to kill you.
