After Table Mountain, we toured the Castle of Good Hope in downtown Cape Town. It's the oldest colonial structure in S. Africa (built about 1666) and originally served as a fort. When we visited (Saturday morning) a party was in progress (perhaps a wedding).
Later, we visited the gardens along Government Avenue and saw the statue of Cecil Rhodes. The statue points north with the inscription, "Your hinterland is there," a reference to his Cape-to-Cairo imperialistic dream.
We stopped in St. George's Cathedral, the former church of Nobel Peace Prize winner, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The church was decorated with huge palms for Palm Sunday (the following day).
Finally, we stopped at the Slave Lodge, a museum housing a number of historical exhibits. Nearby are the Houses of Parliament. South Africa, unlike the U.S., has its branches of government in different cities.
