Sun City is somewhat like the Las Vegas of Africa.  Located about 100 miles west of Johannesburg, the resort was created in the wilderness and is described by the natives as "over the top."  We stayed in the Palace Hotel that is way "over the top."  The hotel has gorgeous finishes and furnishings and the scale of everything is unbelievably large.  To get to Sun City, we had a non-stop, 50 seat prop plane on South African Airways from Skukuza airport near MalaMala to Sun City.  Only one other couple was on the plane.

The majority interest in Sun City is owned by entertainer Michael Jackson, who spends a great deal of time there in the $15,000 per day, King's Suite.  The resort was initially very successful because it offered the only gambling in S. Africa but now there is gambling near Johannesburg.  Besides the great architecture and scale of the place, the resort has an earthquake bridge (third row, right) that shakes and vents steam (pretty tame) and a beach where a wave machine creates a six foot wave periodically.

We also visited the aviary near one of the golf courses.  It featured many beautiful birds including the gorgeous Chinese pheasant.
