Cartagena, founded in 1533, is a mix of 16th century Spain and 20th Century metropolis. Cartagena was an important port for shipment of gold and emeralds to Spain. However, pirates attacked the city frequently so that a protective wall was built around the city and streets were made intentionally narrow and crooked to ward off attacks. This layout survives, giving the city its historical charm. |
